DoLS only applies to hospitals and care homes

Unfortunately, there are times when an individual’s liberty needs to be restricted for their own wellbeing. Some times that restriction needs to develop into depriving someone of their liberty. To ensure the individuals liberty is not abused and is only deprived using the minimum method for the minimum time, safeguards are required. These safeguards, if used correctly, protect not only the individual concerned but also the care home and care staff.

DoLS is a relatively new piece of legislation for which case law and important legal interpretation is still being made and will do so for many years. During this time decisions already made in test cases may be overturned or they may not.

There is no legal definition of deprivation of liberty- only the courts can decide!

Course Length

The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguard (DOLS ) Training Course will run for approximately 4 hours (1/2 Day).

Course Description

This DoLS (Deprivation of Liberty safeguarding course provides a good basic insight and increase awareness of why restriction is sometimes needed? A restriction on an individual’s liberty, in a healthcare setting, is usually due to the person being incapable of making a decision that could affect his or her health. Generally care homes have a legal duty of care over their clients and part of that is keeping them safe. Often this means some restriction of liberty. The course syllabus and skills, Innovative scenarios and practical exercises help delegates to learn and understand the basic reasons of Deprivation of liberty safeguard and to improve their awareness of the subject.

  • Legislation around DoLS, what is and what is not allowed.DoLS code of practice
  • DoLS Criteria (6 assessments) and Procedure
  • Authorisations Standard and Urgent.
  • Assessment team and understanding the person.
  • Mental Capacity test and inappropriate referral.
  • Relevant Person’s representative
  • Reporting Abuse.

All students will be issued a certificate on successful completion of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguard (DOLS ) Training Course.
